SR-22 Auto Insurance in Alabama

When driving in Alabama, auto insurance is required. In fact, in addition to having the proper registration on the vehicle, Alabama auto insurance laws require the following minimum liability amounts:

  • $25,000 bodily injury or death of any one person in any one motor vehicle accident and, $50,000 for all persons.
  • $25,000 for property damages.
  • Insurance is mandatory for vehicle and driver under the State's Compulsory Law.
 
 

Failure to show auto insurance

Proof of suitable Alabama auto insurance is required at the time of vehicle registration. As of this writing, the state of Alabama does not have a compulsory insurance electronic program or an electronic reporting program for SR-22 Certificates of Future Proof. However, in the event the driver is not able to provide proof of insurance at the time of a vehicle accident, his or her vehicle registration will be suspended. In order to reinstate registration on the vehicle, a $100.00 reinstatement fee and SR -22 filing  is required for one year.

Alabama auto insurance and DUI

DUI fines and fees in Alabama are very expensive, and can easily run into the thousands-of-dollars. They can also include jail time of up to one year on a first offense. SR-22 auto insurance is mandatory for three-years after a DUI conviction. SR-22 auto insurance is also used for "high risk" drivers .

If you are currently under an SR-22 auto insurance program in another state, and then move into the state of Alabama, you will need to apply for an in-state program. SR-22 insurance is not interstate in nature, and your old SR-22 will not be considered valid.
