SR-22 Auto Coverage in Colorado

SR-22 Auto Insurance in Colorado

Like many states, Colorado has set into place certain means in which high risk drivers can be allowed to use the roadways while maintaining their auto insurance. One such method is called SR-22 auto insurance.

Under Colorado law, in order to get your license back after you have been convicted of offenses, or to prevent your license from being suspended in the first place, you may need to file an SR-22 certificate.

SR-22 is simply a rider to an auto insurance policy. Technically, SR-22 is not auto insurance; rather, it is a promise by the insurance company that guarantees you will maintain auto insurance for a certain period of time.

The initial SR-22 form is provided by the insurance company when you buy your liability insurance. This form must be filed with the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles. You may deliver the form in person at to the DMV, on Pierce Street in Lakewood, Colorado. Please note that facsimiles and copies are not acceptable under Colorado auto insurance law.

Failure to maintain SR-22

If you do not make the premium payments and the SR-22 lapses, then the insurance company can – and will – notify the Motor Vehicle Division. Your license will be suspended for that reason alone. If for some reason, you wish to change insurance carriers, you must get a new SR-22 before you let the old one lapse.

If the SR-22 does lapse, you may be required to pay fees and fines that are punitive in nature. You will also need to re-establish a policy which can also be expensive. In most cases, you may be required to keep the SR-22 certificate valid for three years. The amount of time the certificate must remain in effect will be determined by the offense that created the situation in the first place.
