Washington D.C. Auto Insurance

All drivers in District of Columbia are required to carry auto insurance at all times , even if their cars are registered in another state. If they are pulled over by a police officer, drivers must provide proof of insurance, such as an ID card or policy declaration.

Minimum Washington D.C. auto insurance

Washington D.C. drivers are required to have the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury and Death: $25,000 to covers one person in any one accident, and $50,000 to cover all injuries
  • Property Damages: $10,000

D.C. residents are also required to carry Uninsured Motorist Coverage in the following amounts:

  • Bodily Injury and Death: $25,000 to cover one person in any one accident, and $50,000 to cover all injuries
  • Property Damages: $5,000

Penalties without Washington D.C. auto insurance

If a driver cannot show proof of insurance, he or she will face a fine of $30. If drivers let their insurance lapse, they can be fined $150 during the first month, plus $7 each additional day until they can show they are once again under an insurance policy.

Drivers who have gotten into car accidents need to show proof of insurance at the scene. Those without insurance will be required to purchase insurance and have their insurance agency file an SR-22 certificate with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). 

If they can't compensate the other drivers for damages, the vehicle registration and license can be suspended for six months. To reinstate driving privileges, drivers will need to pay a $75 fee along with the SR-22.

Drivers who commit insurance fraud will have their vehicle registrations suspended and also receive a fine.
