Auto Coverage in Florida

Florida Auto Insurance

Drivers in the state of Florida need to have vehicle insurance as well as a vehicle registration. If a police officer pulls a driver over, the driver will be required to show proof of insurance – often in a policy binder or as an ID Card. Drivers who are caught without insurance in Florida may face suspension of their driver's license.

Minimum Florida auto insurance

The insurance requirements for Florida drivers are relatively low, when compared with many other states, but it's also recommended to purchase more than the minimum amount of protection in order to protect your finances and investment in your vehicles.

The requirements for the following minimum liability coverage are as follows:

  • Bodily Injury and Death: $10,000 to cover one person in any one accident, and $20,000 to cover all injuries
  • Property Damages: $10,000

Florida also has an electronic reporting program, so officers can track driver's license information with any vehicle registration.

Penalties for driving without Florida auto insurance

Drivers who are involved in an accident will receive a warning notice if they can't show proof of insurance on the scene. They may have their driver's license suspended, and their vehicle registration may also be suspended for up to three years.  They will also be liable for fines of anywhere from $150 to $500, which may increase if drivers have repeat offenses.

In Florida, there is a no-fault law meaning that in some accidents there does not need to be a driver given fault for causing the crash. However, if a driver is found to be at fault, then he or she will need to compensate the victim and pay the cost for medical bills or other damages. If the driver is uninsured he will also need to buy insurance and file proof with a SR-22 certificate.
