Ford Auto Insurance

The Ford Motor Company is still a family-owned corporation, after more than a century in existence. Henry Ford launched the company in 1903, with the help of some seed money invested by the Dodge family. Ford was only able to make a handful of cars per day starting out, but the company stayed on its feet through the Great Depression, and today is recognized as one of the "Big Three " automakers in Detroit. Ford builds cars, trucks and SUVs, and also builds cars under the Lincoln and Mercury monikers.  All of these vehicles have reasonable auto insurance rates if you spend enough time researching options.

Ford crash and theft results

The risk of getting your Ford stolen is rather high compared to other vehicles. Fords accounted for 19% of the top 100 most commonly stolen cars, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Some of the cars that made the list were:

  • Ford Mustang
  • Ford Ranger
  • Ford Explorer
  • Ford Escort
  • Ford Taurus

Ford models did well on crash tests, except for the Ford Focus, which scored a mere "acceptable " rating on side impact crashes. The Mustang Convertible and Ranger models failed rear crash impacts, based on 2009 ratings provided by the Insturance Institute for Highway Safety.

Costs of auto insurance for Fords

There are many Ford models and you would expect the average yearly insurance costs to be all over the map. However, most of the yearly insurance costs (as of 2009) are between $1,000 and $1,900, with only one model breaking the $2,000 mark: the Ford Shelby GT500. The insurance cost on that model is $2,063 per year.

Insurance costs for the Ford F-Series range from $1,194 to $1,855. The Taurus models average $1,259 and the Explorers average $1,178. The Ford Escape has the lowest in premium costs, averaging $1,190 per year. Close to that is the Expedition, which costs $1,296 and the Edge which costs $1,336. Of course, all of these premiums can be lowered if you're persistent.
