SR-22 Auto Coverage in Hawaii
SR-22 Auto Insurance in Hawaii
Hawaii – land of islands. But living on an island does not mean living without auto insurance. All vehicle owners in Hawaii are required to have at least liability auto insurance. And if you're a high-risk driver, then chances are that you must also file an SR-22 form.
Hawaii auto insurance minimums
- $20,000 per person for bodily injury
- $40,000 per accident for bodily injury
- $10,000 per accident for property damage
- $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP)
You must show proof of insurance when registering a vehicle. It is also mandatory that you provide proof of insurance if stopped by law enforcement officers. Failure to produce proof of insurance can result in fines, loss of license, and requirement to obtain SR-22 certification.
Hawaii SR-22 information
Drivers who are involved in accidents, are found guilty of DUI, or who have been shown not to have auto insurance upon request by an authorized police officer are often required to purchase SR-22 auto insurance certificates in order to have their driving privileges reinstated.
The SR-22 is not an auto insurance policy but rather a promise from a state -licensed auto insurance company that the offender has purchased insurance; a Hawaii SR-22 auto insurance form is also a further promise that the insurance company will notify Hawaii DMV if the insurance lapses.
In lieu of an SR-22, the offender may post a security bond in the amount of $25,000, but most people opt for the auto insurance.
Lapse of SR-22
In Hawaii, auto insurance must be carried at all times when a vehicle is in operation. For some offenders, the SR-22 must also be carried. If the auto insurance lapses, for any reason, the DMV will revoke all driving privileges immediately. If the offender cancels the SR-22, driving privileges will be suspended until another SR-22 is filed.
