Auto Coverage in Hawaii
Hawaii Auto Insurance
Drivers in Hawaii are lawfully obligated to have automobile insurance and to keep proof of their insurance in the car with them at all times, in order to show to a police officer if they are stopped on the road – or if they are involved in an accident.
Minimum Hawaii auto insurance
Drivers in Hawaii are required to buy insurance in the following minimum amounts:
- Bodily Injury and Death: $20,000 to cover one person in any one accident, and $40,000 to cover all injuries
- Property Damages: $10,000
- Personal Injury Protection: $10,000
The personal injury protection is one item that isn't required in all states, but it helps pay medical costs in case of an accident.
Penalties without Hawaii auto insurance
If you are driving in Hawaii, and you find yourself in an accident when you don't have auto insurance, then your driving privileges can be suspended for two years.
Drivers in the state of Hawaii who are involved in an accident, and found to be at fault, may also face getting their license suspended if they can't pay the damages for the other vehicle or the medical bills for the other drivers involved in the accident.
This means that you will need to have enough insurance to pay for the damages. However, Hawaii does have a no-fault rule, so some accidents may result in no driver being found to be at fault. In such a situation, each party is responsible for covering their own costs for vehicle repair or medical bills in minor injuries.
If drivers are found to be driving without insurance, or can't pay their liabilities, then they may be required to file an SR-22 Certificate or by posting securities up to $25,000 .
