Idaho Auto Insurance Laws
Auto Insurance Laws and Trends in ID
Every state in the country enforces its own rules and regulations regarding auto insurance. In Idaho, all motorists are required to carry minimum amounts of liability insurance. Liability Insurance protects drivers against financial difficulty if they are responsible for an automobile accident. Liability includes coverage to damaged property, as well as any injuries sustained in an accident.
Requirements and types of auto insurance in Idaho
The minimum amounts of liability required in Idaho are $20,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. Failure to secure the minimum requirements will result in fines and possible suspensions.
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This covers medical expenses, funeral expenses, daycare expenses, loss of wages, rehabilitation, and long term care.
- Collision: Physical damages to your vehicle caused by an at-fault accident or rollover.
- Comprehensive: Physical damages to your vehicle caused by fire, theft, windstorm, hail, vandalism, or animal collision.
- Under/uninsured Motorist: If you are involved in an accident with a driver who carries inadequate insurance or no insurance at all.
Idaho enforces extremely strict laws when it comes to dealing with motorists who drive while impaired. Drivers who are over the legal limit of 0.08% (zero tolerance for teenage drivers) will face harsh fines and prison terms. In fact, a first offense can carry a prison term of 6 months, while a third offense can land a person in jail for 10 years. This is in place to deter drivers from driving under the influence and possibly causing injury or death to other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
The number of accidents involving DUIs in Idaho has been decreasing slightly over the past 4 years; however, the number of fatalities has remained relatively steady.
