SR-22 Auto Coverage in Indiana

SR-22 Auto Insurance in Indiana

Indiana auto insurance laws are pretty straightforward. When you register your vehicle, you have to tell them you have auto insurance, and you must keep auto insurance on the vehicle at all times. Even though you do not have show proof of insurance when you register the vehicle, you should still know that the Indiana BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles) does randomly check with auto insurance companies – and SR-22 forms are also required for certain offenses.

Proof of insurance in Indiana

Indiana is one of the few states that does NOT require motorists to show proof of insurance at the scene of an accident. However, you must be able to prove you had insurance at the time of the accident within 45 days. If you cannot do so, then your driving privileges may be suspended for 90 days.

Indiana SR-22 information

As with most states, Indiana uses the SR-22 certificate for proof of financial responsibility for certain drivers who have been convicted of an offense which requires the driver to maintain financial responsibility for a three-year period.

Under Indiana auto insurance law, if the SR-22 is cancelled or terminated for any reason the auto insurance provider must notify the Indiana BMV. In most cases, the BMV will suspend your driver’s license.

In addition, you may be required to pay heavy fines and fees. For this reason, it is important to keep the SR-22 current and paid for. The same applies to the underlying auto insurance policy. It, too, must remain in good standing.
