SR-22 Auto Coverage in Louisiana
SR-22 Auto Insurance in Louisiana
Louisiana auto insurance rules require all vehicles to be insured with at least the minimum amount of liability insurance as stated by the DMV. Unlike some states that allow for self-certification, proof of liability insurance must be provided during vehicle registration or driver license transactions. Also, all drivers must show proof of auto insurance if requested by a Louisiana police officer; this includes SR-22 auto insurance.
Minimum auto insurance coverage for Louisiana
- $10,000 - Bodily Injury to One Person
- $20,000 - Bodily Injury to More than One Person
- $10,000 - Damage to Property of Others
As mentioned above, these are the lower limits of Louisiana auto insurance. Some drivers may wish to carry more coverage as these limits are actually very low considering the cost of medical expenses these days.
Louisiana SR-22 coverage
Under Louisiana auto insurance laws, an SR-22 can be used as proof of financial responsibility. There are several reasons a person may be required to get an SR-22. A few of these reasons include: reckless driving, driving without auto insurance, DUI, failure to test for alcohol or drugs.
If required to get an SR-22, the certificate must be issued by an auto insurance licensed to do business in Louisiana. The SR-22 must be kept valid for a period of three years. In many cases, the SR-22 may be required in order for reinstatement of driver license privileges.
SR-22 auto insurance from out-of-state
An SR-22 purchased from another state will not be valid in Louisiana. The SR-22 must be purchased in the state where the vehicle is registered.
It is important to understand that the Louisiana SR-22 is NOT auto insurance in and of itself. It is a certificate that simply states that you have auto insurance, issued by the company that gave you the policy. It is also a promise to notify Louisiana DMV should you allow the SR-22 or the auto insurance to lapse. If either of these polices lapse, then you will most likely lose your license.
