Auto Coverage in Maine
Maine Auto Insurance
Drivers in the state of Maine, as in most other states, are required to carry proof of their auto insurance in their cars while driving at all times.
Minimum Maine auto insurance
Compared with other states, drivers in Maine are required to have much higher amounts of insurance, which can help protect them in case they are at fault in an accident and need their insurance to cover the costs for damages. In addition to the usual bodily injury and property insurance, Maine drivers also need to purchase uninsured motorist coverage as well as medical payments coverage. The minimums are:
- Bodily Injury and Death: $50,000 to cover one person in any one accident, and $100,000 to cover all injuries
- Property Damages: $25,000
- Uninsured Motorist Insurance: $50,000 to cover one person in an accident, or $100,000 for all injuries
- Medical Payments: $2,000
Discounts for Maine auto insurance
You can be eligible for certain discounts on your insurance if you are a lower risk for your auto insurance company, such as in the following instances
- Insuring multiple vehicles with the same auto company
- Keeping good grades for students in the household
- Having vehicle safety features such as airbags, alarm systems and anti-lock brakes
- Driving less than the average mileage per year
- Buying a home or rental insurance policy from your auto insurance provider
Maine auto insurance laws
In addition to requiring a high amount of insurance, Maine varies from other states in that it uses a tort system, meaning that someone must be found at fault in an automobile accident. If you're found at fault, then you will be held responsible for paying for all the damages.
