Karl Benz, one of the founders of the Mercedes-Benz brand, is credited with building one of the first motorcycles in the world in 1886. Another German inventor, Gottlieb Daimler, built a steam-engine automobile in the 1870s. The two merged their companies in the 1920s, and began producing Daimler-Benz automobiles. Mercedes-Benz is a division of Daimler AG today, and produces everything from 4-wheel-drive vehicles to luxury compact cars.

Mercedes risk considerations

Mercedes cars received adequate to good ratings on rear crash protection results. However, two models received only a marginal rating. These were the Mercedes M Class and C Class models. Also, newer Mercedes cars received an adequate or higher rating on front and side crash impacts. A few models that received a marginal rating were manufactured prior to 1985.

Overall, a few Mercedes vehicles made the Top Safety Picks list issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: the Mercedes C, Mercedes R and Mercedes M classes. In addition to safety, Mercedes vehicles have a low risk of theft. The National Insurance Crime Bureau issued a list of the top 100 most commonly stolen cars, and no Mercedes vehicles made the list.

Mercedes insurance costs

Ownership costs of a Mercedes-Benz include annual insurance costs. Knowing those costs and buying the right insurance will help to keep you financially safe in the event of an accident. A Mercedes-Benz R-Class vehicle will cost you $1,773 per year for insurance. Slightly lower in costs are those in the Mercedes-Benz E class, that carry an annual cost of $1,689. If you own a car in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, you can expect to pay about $2,437 every year. Finally, Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class models cost $1,855 per year, as of 2009.
