SR-22 information for Michigan
Under certain conditions, drivers who are considered high risk may be required to purchase an SR-22 auto insurance certificate. Offenses such as reckless driving, excessive tickets, DUI, refusal to test for alcohol or drugs upon lawful stop are all possible reasons a driver may be required to obtain an SR-22.
The SR-22 is not auto insurance, but rather a promise that auto insurance has been purchased, and also that it will remain in effect for a set period of time. In order for an SR-22 to be valid, it must be purchased in-state from an auto insurance company licensed in Michigan. You cannot use an SR-22 that was purchased in another state.
It is important to understand that if the SR-22 is cancelled, or if the underlying auto insurance lapses for any reason, the issuer of the SR-22 must notify Michigan DMV. This often means loss of driver's license, as well as heavy fines and fees for re-instatement.
