Auto Coverage in Nebraska
Nebraska Auto Insurance
Drivers in Nebraska, as in many other states in the U.S., need to carry proof of insurance with them while driving at all times. If a police officer stops you, or you need to register a car, or if you are involved in an accident, you can be asked to show your insurance ID card . If you don't have insurance, then you may face heavy penalties. More importantly, the coverage is designed to protect you if you're in an accident, and prevent you from losing money if you're the at-fault driver.
Minimum Nebraska auto insurance
Drivers in the state of Nebraska are required to carry liability insurance in the following amounts:
- Bodily Injury and Death: $25,000 to cover one person in any one accident, and $50,000 to cover all injuries
- Property Damages: $25,000
Nebraska law requires that, in an accident, one of the drivers must be found at fault (this is called a tort system) . A tort system means that one of the drivers will be responsible for paying for all the damages in the accident, including medical bills for all drivers and their passengers, as well as vehicle repairs. The costs in such an accident can skyrocket, and if you don't have enough coverage to pay for them, you can easily go broke and even lose your driving privileges if you're unable to pay the costs.
Penalties without Nebraska auto insurance
If you're found driving without the required amount of insurance in the state of Nebraska, you can lose your vehicle registration and your driving privileges. Then, once you do buy insurance, you will also need to file an SR-22 certificate with the state, showing that you have once again purchased the requisite amount of insurance.
