SR-22 Auto Coverage in New Hampshire

SR-22 Auto Insurance in New Hampshire

Unlike most other states, New Hampshire does not have a  mandatory auto insurance rule. This does NOT mean you should drive without insurance. If you do, and you are involved in an accident, then you may be held liable for damages – as well as f or any medical expenses that may arise. Both of these costs can easily run into the tens-of-thousands of dollars.

It is unwise to drive in any state without auto insurance ; New Hampshire is no exception. And although it isn't required of most drivers, certain New Hampshire drivers will be required to carry auto insurance because they have to provide an SR-22 certificate to the state.

SR-22 information for New Hampshire drivers

Under New Hampshire auto insurance rules, anyone who has had their suspended for an offense such as a DWI is required to provide an SR-22 certificate of insurance. The SR-22 must be kept in good standing for a period of 3 years for the first DWI offense, and for a period of 5 years for a second conviction.

DUI is only one type of violation that may result in having to obtain an SR-22. Other violations include reckless driving, speeding, excessive traffic tickets in a given amount of time, and other offenses as deemed by the DMV. The amount of time that the SR-22 has to be held in good standing varies with the offense and past driving history but will normally run between 1 and 5 years.
