Auto Coverage in New Jersey
New Jersey Auto Insurance
Drivers in New Jersey are required to have a basic minimum auto insurance policy, including liability insurance, personal injury protection, and uninsured motorist coverage.
The law also requires drivers to have their insurance ID Cards in their cars with them at all times, so that if a police officer pulls the driver over, or if there is an accident, they can show proof of insurance.
Minimum New Jersey auto insurance
New Jersey law specifies a minimum amount of coverage, like most other states. Unlike most other states, there is also an official Standard Policy that is more than the minimum coverage, and is recommended by the state in order for drivers to protect their finances. The two -policy requirements are shown below:
Minimum Policy
- Bodily Injury and Death: $10,000 to cover all injuries in an accident
- Property Damages: $5,000
- Personal Injury Protection: $15,000 per person, per accident
- Permanent Injury Protection: Up to $250,000
If you've compared other states, you'll notice that the rates for bodily injury and property damage here are very low, but that the policy requires Personal Injury Protection and Permanent Injury protection, which are not always required in other states.
Standard Policy
