SR-22 information for New Mexico drivers
New Mexico is one a few states that does not require an SR-22 filing as proof of financial responsibility. All SR-22's are state specific, meaning each state may establish its own rules for their use or non-use.
Having said this, it is important to remember that if you are under an SR-22 from another state and you move into the state of New Mexico, you must still continue to keep the SR-22 current and in good standing. In other words, you may allow the out-of-state SR-22 to lapse for nonpayment or any other reason.
Also, you may find that in-state auto insurance companies (New Mexico companies) will want to provide you with the same amount of insurance as you had to have in the originating state. This is not always the case, but it may happen.
When you apply for New Mexico auto insurance, you should tell the insurer about the SR-22 that you have in effect. They will find out anyway, so it is better to be up-front about it when buying your policy.
