SR-22 Auto Coverage in New York
SR-22 Auto Insurance in New York
New York auto insurance law requires that all motor vehicles that are registered in the state have at least a minimum amount of liability insurance. Auto insurance must be kept in good standing at all times; otherwise the NY state Department of Motor Vehicles may require you to carry SR-22 auto insurance.
In New York, those applying for vehicle registration are required to show proof of auto insurance. You can do this by using the New York State Insurance Identification Card. Two of these cards are issued by the auto insurance company that carries your insurance. You must show proof of insurance upon request by a low enforcement officer.
SR-22 information for New York drivers
New York and North Carolina are the only two states that do not use SR-22 filings and do not require SR-22 filings if you have an SR-22 in another state. Most of the auto insurance companies that are licensed to do business in New York do not offer out-of-state SR-22 filings.
While this may sound like good news to drivers who have an outstanding SR-22 from another state, you must be careful. If the state that has the outstanding SR-22 mandates that you keep the filing up to date, no matter where you move to, you should consider doing so as this may prevent future problems should you move back to that state (or even to another state that also allows SR-22 filings from out-of-state).
