SR-22 Auto Coverage in North Dakota

SR-22 Auto Insurance in North Dakota

North Dakota auto insurance rules require all motor vehicles that use public roads to have the minimum amount of liability insurance on each vehicle, but there is another type of insurance that North Dakota drivers may also need: N.D. SR-22 coverage.

SR-22 auto insurance information

North Dakota auto insurance law allows that certain drivers may be required to get SR-22 auto insurance filings. This is also known as proof of financial responsibility filings. Generally, drivers who have had suspensions for DUI, reckless driving, refusing to test for alcohol, and driving without auto insurance are required to get the SR-22.

The SR-22 must be obtained from an auto insurance company licensed to do business in North Dakota. If you allow the auto insurance to lapse, for any reason, then the insurance company will notify DMV and your license will be suspended. The same is true with the SR-22 itself.

The SR-22 must be filed by the auto insurance company and must go to the Drivers License and Traffic Safety Division of the North Dakota DMV. Also, you must keep the SR-22 in good standing and on file for one year after driving privileges are reinstated – or one year from the date you were issued a temporary restricted license. In addition to SR-22 certification, you'll need to carry the following minimum amounts of North Dakota auto insurance coverage.

Minimum auto insurance requirements for North Dakota

  • $25,000 – Bodily Injury Per Person
  • $50,000 – Bodily Injury Per Accident
