SR-22 Auto Coverage in Pennsylvania

SR-22 Auto Insurance in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania auto insurance rules require all registered vehicles to be insured at certain minimum levels. If stopped by the police,  or if involved in a crash, you must be able to provide proof of insurance. If you are not able to provide proof of auto insurance upon request or at the scene of a crash, then the DMV will most likely suspend your driver's license until you can prove that you do have it. You may also have to meet an additional requirement: Pennsylvanian SR-22 certification.

SR-22 information for Pennsylvania

SR-22 certification is required of certain Pennsylvanians considered to be 'risky' drivers. It ensures that you're maintaining auto insurance coverage by maintaining frequent communication of the status of your auto insurance policy between your auto insurer and the State of Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles.

Pennsylvania does not use the SR-22 certificate system as proof of financial responsibility. However, there are some conditions that you need to be aware of if you have an SR-22 currently in effect from another state and you are moving into Pennsylvania.

Each state is allowed to make its own rules concerning SR-22 filings. If you move into Pennsylvania and you have an outstanding SR-22 from another state, you must continue to honor the conditions of that SR-22, even though you do not live in that state anymore.

In the event you let the SR-22 lapse, for non-payment for example, the auto insurance company carrying the SR-22 is required by law to contact the Pennsylvania DMV. This may lead to having your license suspended or revoked altogether.
