Saturn Auto Insurance

Saturn was part of General Motors' response to the massive influx of small imported cars in the 1980s. The public got its first look at a Saturn car in 1984. However, the first one that was for sale to the general public didn't roll off the assembly line until 1990, a full six years later. The moment it rolled off the line, a large number of affordable auto insurance options were made available for the Saturn. Although Saturn brands, including the Saturn L Series and the Saturn VUE, were somewhat popular with the public, it doesn't appear that the company is likely to survive beyond 2009. GM has announced that it will close its Saturn division as part of restructuring, and as of October 1, 2009, Saturn is no longer making automobiles.

Saturn safety and risks

Two of the Saturn models made the list of Top Safety Picks issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, Saturn scored all over the map when it came to rear crash protection. The Saturn ION, L Series and Relay received poor ratings on rear crash test results. The Saturn VUE and Aura received just marginal ratings.

One final consideration that can impact insurance costs is the theft risk associated with a particular car. The National Insurance Crime Bureau issued a list of the top 100 most commonly stolen cars. The Saturn SL 34 made the list, but it was the only Saturn model.
