Tennessee SR-22 information and issues

In Tennessee, the SR-22 is also called "proof of future financial responsibility," and it is required under Tennessee Code 55-12-114. The SR-22 may be required from drivers convicted of certain violations , including (but not limited to):

  • DUI's
  • Vehicular homicide
  • Reckless driving
  • Accumulating too many tickets
  • Unpaid tickets
  • Driving without auto insurance

For those who must file an SR-22, it must be obtained from an auto insurance company licensed through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. The company should be approved to issue motor vehicle liability insurance coverage.

In the state of Tennessee, the length of time you are required to carry SR-22 coverage will vary from 3-5 years.  If you allow the SR-22 to lapse, or if your auto insurance is cancelled, then the auto insurance company must notify the Tennessee DMV of the lapse and your license will be suspended. You may also face heavy fines and fees in some cases. An out-of-state SR-22 will not be valid under TN state auto insurance laws. If you're moving to Tennessee, then you will need to purchase a new SR-22 auto insurance policy.
