SR-22 Auto Coverage in Texas

SR-22 Auto Insurance in Texas

Texas auto insurance law requires that all drivers maintain at least a minimum level of liability insurance. As you know, liability insurance is used only to pay for damages, injuries, or death to the other party.

In Texas, it is illegal to operate a vehicle without liability insurance. If caught doing so, you may be fined or have your license suspended. An SR-22 certification may be one of the consequences you'll face for not maintaining insurance coverage. SR-22 forms are an assurance provided to the State of Texas that you are maintaining auto insurance coverage, and if you're a high risk driver, then chances are that you're required to file one.

SR-22 information for Texas

SR-22 auto insurance is proof of financial responsibility and it must be obtained from an auto insurance company that is licensed to do business in Texas. You may use an SR-22 certification that is from another state or that originated in another state.

Reasons for having to obtain an SR-22 include: reckless driving, driving without insurance, DUI, and too many tickets in a given period of time – and it's not necessarily limited to these reasons . The length of time that you must keep the SR-22 in effect will vary, depending on the offenses and past driving record. Generally, in Texas, SR-22 coverage must be held for 2 to 5 years.

If you are under an SR-22 requirement, it is very important that you do not allow the SR-22 to lapse. If it does, then the auto insurance company must immediately notify the Texas Department of Public Safety. Once this happens the DPS will suspend your license.
